From first lesson to driving licence: how the whole journey works

When you're just starting out, the whole road to a licence can feel foggy: theory, practice, some CSDD exam. In reality it's a clear route. Here's how it looks from start to finish.

First steps

Everything starts with the first lesson: getting to know the car, a level check, and your first slow movements in a safe spot. Nothing is graded here — this is about working out where you personally need to start. More on this in the article about the first lesson.

Theory

Theory has to be passed separately, and you can do it at any driving school that's convenient — the rules are the same everywhere. I'll point you towards whatever suits your situation best, so you don't overpay or lose time.

Practice

This is the main part of the journey. It starts on the practice pad with basic skills, then moves on to real Riga routes, junctions and manoeuvres. Every lesson has a topic and a review of mistakes — never "just driving around". How many lessons you'll actually need depends on quite a few things, and I go through that honestly here.

Preparing for the exam

Closer to the exam, we work through exam routes, typical mistakes and managing stress. I cover what really affects passing in a separate article, and how to prepare in general here.

The exam, and what comes after

The CSDD exam is a check, not a verdict. Not passing on your first attempt is completely normal, and it doesn't mean you're a bad driver. We calmly go through what didn't work and carry on.

Support all the way to the result

The main difference between a mentor and a "lesson provider" is that a mentor stays with you right to the end — until the exam is passed and you're holding your licence. That's how I work.
